TAX TALK Fall of 2006

I would like to share some information that I found concerning the expansion of the Pennsylvania Property Tax/Rent Rebate program. This law was part of House Bill 39 which became Act 1 of
2006 on June 27th of 2006.

The new law increases the income limit from $15,000 to $35,000 for homeowners and boosts the maximum rebate from $500 to $650. Remember to exclude one-half of your Social Security Income when calculating your eligibility income.

Homeowners may now receive:
Income / Rebate
$0 to $8,000 $650
$8,001 to $15,000 $500
$15,001 to $18,000 $300
$18,001 to $35,000 $250

Renters may now receive:
Income / Rebate
$0 to $8,000 $650
$8,001 to $15,000 $500

The PTRR expansion for homeowners and renters begins with tax bills received in 2006; rebates
will be paid starting in July 2007.

The age requirement remains unchanged: claimants or spouses 65 years of age or older;
widows or widowers 50 years of age or older; and the permanently disabled 18 years of age or
older may qualify for the PTRR program.

PLEASE NOTE: Make sure You keep Your 2006 stamped “PAID” receipts to qualify for the
program. Always make copies of Your receipts and any forms that You send to the State.
If You have questions feel free to reach me at 774-8023 or You can call the local State
Representatives office at 774-2892. The State Representatives office is very knowledgeable and
helpful with this program.
